About Guaraguao Forest Reserve

Guaraguao Forest Reserve is located in the central-western mountainous region of Puerto Rico, primarily within the municipalities of Adjuntas and Utuado. This forest reserve comprises a rugged terrain featuring steep slopes, river valleys, and rich tropical forest ecosystems. It forms part of the Cordillera Central mountain range, known for its abundant rainfall and biodiversity. The reserve protects significant habitat for native plant species and wildlife, including some endemic and threatened fauna. Visitors can explore a network of trails and secondary roads that provide access to scenic overlooks, freshwater streams, and waterfalls. The forest’s dense canopy hosts a variety of bird species, making it a favored destination for birdwatchers. Historically, Guaraguao has been important for watershed protection, contributing to the island’s water supply, and has traditional importance for local communities through use of its natural resources. Recreational activities focus on hiking, wildlife viewing, and ecological education, providing visitors an opportunity to experience one of Puerto Rico’s less frequented natural areas. The reserve's relative remoteness compared to more popular parks gives it a peaceful and authentic forest atmosphere.
